HSV City School Board Appointment 
Last night the City Council appointed Ryan Renaud to Huntsville City School Board District 4 in a 3-2 vote. Renaud was one of five candidates who interviewed for the position. The appointment fills a vacancy left by Walker McGinnis, who recently resigned from the board. LEARN MORE
NEW mixed-use development planned in downtown Huntsville 
City Council has approved a $325 million development on the 13 acres of vacant land between Monroe St., Clinton Ave. and Holmes Ave. This lot was the former home of the Coca Cola facility and has remained vacant since 2014. The property, called Clinton Commons, would include a 100 room hotel, an apartment complex, retail, and business space, as well as public parking deck and lots to address increasing need for parking in downtown. The city’s financial commitment would be about $18m with a conservatively estimated $40m+ return over 10 years through sales and lodging taxes. LEARN MORE.
Affordable & Attainable Housing discussion 
The development presentation sparked a lively discussion regarding the continued need for affordable and attainable housing in Huntsville. The apartments planned for this development would be priced such that someone making $75,000/yr would be able to live in the heart of downtown. The median individual income is ~$32,500 and median household income is ~$65,400 per 2019 census data.Council President Jennie Robinson suggested a work session be planned specifically to discuss Affordable & Attainable housing in the near future. Shane Davis also shared that by August they should be ready to present on their findings on the Choice Neighborhoods Grant plan.
